Christmas Shutdown

Ok the year is just about shot and we will close tomorrow 24 December 2010 at 12 noon and reopen on the 10 Jan 2011. This is normally a quiet time in the tool industry and we have noticed that nearly all the specialist tool shops are closed between Christmas and New Year. You can still look at our website 24/7 and place an order. The orders will not be shipped till we return to work. Emails will also not be answered till the 10 Jan 2011.

Wishing all our friends, customers, agents, suppliers and our support staff in Taiwan and China  a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Gary and all the crew @GPW.

Dayacom Pen Parts

Just had a skype call from Dayacom  tonite regarding a few companies in Australia  and USA  who love to use the name DAYACOM in their adds and website, but are selling a cheaper product from other suppliers and creating a lot of confusion in the market place. Quite simply if the pen part does not have DAYACOM on the plastic bag or refill, it is not a DAYACOM product. Beware of a Jnr Gent Pen that has poor quality machining on the threads. Their has been a post on the IAP about this, these are cheap copies and are not DAYACOM pen parts."Be broke or be wealthy, but never accept mediocrity."

China Visit Sept 2010

Originally I had planned to visit China when I was in Taiwan in May this year, but with so much happening and flights not connecting I had to put it off to now. Having been to China many times I am amazed at how quickly  roads, buildings and general progress happens, far quicker then Australia.

The main purpose of this trip was to check out our chuck manufacturing  and associated products. Many products for woodworking companies are now made in China, some are very good ,others are not so good.

I flew form Brisbane to Hong Kong then flew to Qingdao in Northern China, a very beautiful city with  some major German settlement in the early 1900's, this is evident in the older part of Qingdao , with church's houses etc built in european design.

Once I arrived in Qingdao it was straight to business visiting factories in the afternoon then having dinner with sales managers. As most people know I just love the asian food and always try to sample as much local food and drinks as possible. Qingdao is very famous for its beer ,the brand is  Tsingdao Beer

Day 2 and an early start   to visit factories in Yantai area, because of the large area  a car  and driver is necessary  and sometimes we only visit 2 factories which was the case today,We visited a  woodworking and metalworking factory today, both very big and modern. As can be seen in the pic a lot of cast iron parts have been aged for 12 months then bought into the machine shop to be machined and ground for planers and jointers. This factory has tripled in size in the last 3 years and now has  the very latest machining centre's etc.

Day 3 we visited about 8 factories making mainly small woodworking machinery which we sell, here is a pic of the production line of the MC900 ,this run was for a few well known european brands. We do not sell this particular model, but it was interesting to see the production line and the volume of the orders.

Pen Making

Just had a customer in the shop and he told me that the JET mini lathe is no good for pen turning, he sold his and bought a variable speed mini vicmarc. Well now my penkits are no good because they are out of round. Anyway to get to the point he watched a youtube video about some supplier making pens  and is now an expert. What the problem is that all penkits after they are glued up need the ends made square, their are various ways to do this, but for some reason he was just touching them on a disc sander. How you can ever get them perfectly square freehand eludes me. What was happening  was that as the mandrel was tightened they were being pushed out of alignment because the ends were not square.  I always square the ends up with a pen mill then put them on the mandrel and have used various lathes and not had any out of round problems. I read now about extended bushing, turning between centre's,special hollow centre's adjustable length mandrels etc, etc. If careful preparation is done before turning   out of round problems should not exist. One other point to remember is that all pen mandrels are drilled on the end to accept a 60' live centre,I have seen a few problems here with out of round or badly machined live centre's .

Pen Market Shake UP

Just had a very detailed conversation tonight with the CEO of Dayacom Industrial Co. Mr Angus Lee. Over the next few months many changes will take place in the market, what this means for the pen maker is more choice, better pricing and fierce competition. As they say you aint seen nothing yet.

Last Days for Specials

Our high end pen kits and super glue specials finish tomorrow August  31. Please take advantage of these great specials.

Woodshows

We have had a few emails and phone calls  asking if we are going to Canberra this weekend for the woodshow. We are not doing any shows this year due to the high costs and quiet bluntly we are losing money by attending them  and if we were to continue we would have to put our pricing up on everything for everyone and we refuse to do this.

So starting Wednesday afternoon we  are having what we call sneaky facebook specials for  a few hours each day. You must be a friend on facebook to take advantage of these specials.
